Advantages of a Server over a Desktop Computer – Why is a Server required?

As you know the computers are the most powerful computers that can be used by multiple users. I know you are still wondering that what exactly are the advantages of a server over a desktop and why should you buy it?

So, let’s know about some of its major disadvantages in this article.

  1. A server over a desktop computer contains the more powerful processors than a desktop computer. A server is helpful as it supports multiple processors, multiple cores, and multiple threads. Go for it guys if you don’t want to compromise in performance. A lot of virtual machines resides on a single server.

  2. Secondly, the server also supports the advanced RAM technologies like DDR3SDRAM that is scalable, provide you the performance and more secure.

  3. The RAM of the server consists of ECC technology, which can check the single bit errors during reading/write sequences of the RAM.

  4. Servers also support larger cache memories in their CPU’s and fetch the data faster than a desktop computer.

  5. Generally, the same data can be stored on the multiple disks that can help you to protect against the failure of single disks that can be possible through the technology RAID. The speed of fetching and storing of a data is higher.

  6. Servers include redundant power supplies and redundant fan (cooling) modules that prevent your data and let you work continuously while there is the failure of any power supply. On the other hand, the desktops do support single users.

  7. Servers generally have multiple Network Interface Cards and support technologies like Adapter teaming and link aggregation. So, multiple interfaces can be bonded together to achieve a higher throughput and traffic can fail over to adjacent adapters.

  8. The Graphical capabilities of servers are generally very basic as they are not expected to give graphical outputs themselves, but servers are optimized for multi-user applications like database access.

  9. Some servers support hot-swappable hard disks and are rack-mountable. Servers are mostly rack-mountable. They are compact (1U/2U) in size and hence don’t take up much space (unlike the tower based desktop CPU’s). Since servers are rack mountable, they can take advantage of structured cabling.

Servers can be used with software-based health monitoring tools that monitor the health of individual components in a server. They can pinpoint which part is down, which part requires maintenance and they can even anticipate a component failure.Servers are maintained by a system administrator from a central location (like a data center). So, it is easier to apply security policies to the server and back up all critical data. With individual desktops, these things are up to the users.
